Interested in a career in fire or emergency medical services?
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is required by many employers in these fields. Our EMT course prepares recruits for EMT certification. The EMS Program at SWFPSA offers EMT courses to complete recruits’ career readiness.
Step 1: – Verify that you are eligible for application:
Minimum Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age on the first scheduled day of class
- Be a legal resident of the United States (submit proof of residency with application)
- Have a standard high school diploma or GED from an accredited agency (submit copy with application)
- High school students may apply before graduation with current transcripts and a letter of recommendation from the school principal; A copy of the diploma must be received before the first day of class
- Official Transcript of High School Classes will need to be sent to SWFPSA – ATTN: Fire Program Bursar
- This can be hand delivered or mailed to the Academy – This must be in an envelope sealed and stamped by the educational institution; or,
- Transcripts may be emailed from an official school administration to LisaNM@LeeSchools.net. They will not be accepted if received from student email.
No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving perjury or false statements (Background check required before acceptance)
If you have ever been convicted of, pled no contest to, regardless of adjudication, a crime in any jurisdiction, you may be required to submit documentation as stated here. SWFPSA makes no guarantee that any specific offense will be cleared as this is beyond our control
Step 2: – If you meet the minimum requirements:

- Download and complete the FERPA Release Form
- Print and follow Castlebranch Instructions to create an account
- Follow instructions to complete Background Check and Drug Screen
- Print out Pages 1 & 2 of “Health Report” Take Health Report and a copy of your immunization records to family doctor or walk in clinic. Physician will transfer immunization information onto the “Health Report” (upload signed document into CastleBranch) **NOTE*** If you will be getting a TB test – If you received the 1 step TB test your physician can fill in the information on vaccine sheet. If any other TB test is done a lab report upload is required.
- Complete an American Heart Association Basic Life Support course. Must be American Heart Association
- Login and create an account with Bridges EXP – follow all prompts and complete all requirements
- Register for and successfully complete the CASAS skills test – This test is mandatory regardless of regardless of graduation and/or degree status. It is currently offered at FMTC (239-4544) and CCTC (239-574-4440). Please contact them directly for testing information.
- A minimum score of 244 (Reading) and 230 (Math) on the CASAS Test is required to be eligible for application.

Step 3: – Required Uploads

Step 4: Notification
Applicants will be notified of the Academy’s decision within one week of the close of the application period. Please refrain from emailing or calling to ask about your application. When the review and selection process is complete, all applicants will be notified.
Step 5: Orientation
All recruits must attend two mandatory orientation sessions to confirm their seat. All fees are due prior to start date of class.

Course Overview:
The Emergency Medical Technician – ATD (Applied Technology Diploma) course at Southwest Florida Public Service Academy prepares students for certification as emergency medical technicians. The EMT treats various medical/trauma conditions using appropriate equipment and materials.
