Class Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 8:00 am – 5:00pm (8-hour class day & 1 hour lunch break)

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is required by many employers in these fields. Our EMT course prepares recruits for EMT certification. The EMS Program at SWFPSA offers EMT courses to complete recruits’ career readiness.
Minimum Requirements:
Be at least 18 years of age on the first scheduled day of class
Be a legal resident of the United States (submit proof of residency with application)
Have a standard high school diploma or GED from an accredited agency (submit copy with application)
No felony convictions or misdemeanors involving perjury or false statements (Background check required before acceptance) If you have ever been convicted of, pled no contest to, regardless of adjudication, a crime in any jurisdiction, you may be required to submit documentation. SWFPSA makes no guarantee that any specific offense will be cleared as this is beyond our control

Print out EMS Health Report
Take Health Report and a copy of your immunization records to family doctor or walk in clinic. Physician will transfer immunization information onto the “Health Report” (upload signed document into CastleBranch)
**NOTE*** If you will be getting a TB test – If you received the 1 step TB test your physician can fill in the information on vaccine sheet. If any other TB test is done a lab report upload is required.
Complete the online portion of AHA BLS ($37.00) https://shopcpr.heart.org/courses/bls -Print out the completion certificate to be uploaded during application. The hands on portion will be completed here at the Academy during Orientation
Login and create an account with Bridges EXP – You will only be creating your account at this time. Requirements will be completed during Orientation.
Register for and successfully complete the CASAS skills test – This test is mandatory regardless of graduation and/or degree status. It is currently offered at FMTC (239-4544) and CCTC (239-574-4440). Please contact them directly for testing information.
A minimum score of 244 (Reading) and 230 (Math) on the CASAS Test is required to be eligible for application.

Complete the FEMA Independent Study Courses listed below ***UPDATE 2/17/26 – The FEMA website is down due to lapse in funding. You can still complete the application with the understanding that once the website is up again you will be required to submit your completion certificates***
IS-100.C – Introduction to the Incident Command System (A certificate will be provided upon completion)
IS-200.C – Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response (A certificate will be provided upon completion)
Complete the NHI Traffic Incident Management Independent Study (A certificate will be provided upon completion)

Once you have completed all above items you will be ready to apply. Applicants will be notified of the Academy’s decision within one week of the close of the application period. Please refrain from emailing or calling to ask about your application. When the review and selection process is complete, all applicants will be notified. All recruits must attend two mandatory orientation sessions to confirm their seat. Orientation dates and expectations will be covered in the acceptance email. All fees are due prior to start date of class.

Course Overview:
The Emergency Medical Technician – ATD (Applied Technology Diploma) course at Southwest Florida Public Service Academy prepares students for certification as emergency medical technicians. The EMT treats various medical/trauma conditions using appropriate equipment and materials.
Course content includes basic life support level:

- Fractures, dislocations, sprains

- Toxicological emergencies recognition and management

- Emergency childbirth and pregnancy complications
- Environmental emergencies recognition and management
- Written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills

- Extrication and spinal motion restriction
- Safe lifting & moving
- Patient transportation
This course prepares students for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician in accordance with Chapter 64J of the Florida Administrative Code.
